Roberto Cavalli Crystal Tribal Mask Studded Chain Bag

The Find:

Roberto Cavalli (1940-2024) was born in Florence into a family of artists. His grandfather Giuseppe Rossi was a painter of the Macchiaioli movement whose works hang in the Uffizi Gallery. His father was killed in a Nazi reprisal massacre when Roberto was four years old. He enrolled at the Florence Academy of Art, invented a patented process for printing on leather, earned commissions from Hermès and Pierre Cardin, and built one of Italy's most iconic luxury houses from a single boutique in Saint-Tropez in 1972. He once told Vogue: "I started to understand that God is really the best designer, so I started to copy God."

This bag is the embodiment of everything Cavalli believed about fashion. The entire front is covered in hundreds of individually placed micro gold studs. At center: a three-dimensional crystal tribal mask that draws from global ceremonial traditions, reimagined through Cavalli's Italian maximalist lens. The face is pavé-encrusted in rhinestones. The eyes are marquise-cut sapphire crystals. Gold hoop earrings with freshwater pearl drops hang from each side. An oval amethyst cabochon sits at the chin.
