Vintage Coach Metropolitan Briefcase - Black 2
The Find: Andy Sachs's bag in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Anne Hathaway carries the vintage Coach Metropolitan Briefcase through the entire sequel, a piece costume designer Molly Rogers pulled directly from the archive. This is the original Metropolitan, made in the United States from glove-tanned cowhide before Coach moved production overseas. The Metropolitan first launched in 1987. Forty years later, it is the most-referenced handbag in cinema.
This is the June 1995 version.
Curator's note: I cross-referenced this piece against verified on-set photography from filming to confirm the silhouette, hardware, and proportions match Hathaway's screen bag exactly.
The Details:
- Black glove-tanned cowhide, the heaviest leather grade Coach produced
- Solid brass turn-lock closure on the front exterior pocket
- Gusseted front exterior pocket with leather tab
- Top leather carry handle
- Adjustable, removable leather crossbody strap
- Interior with multiple slip pockets
- Embossed Coach creed patch reads No. F5C-5180
Measurements: Approximately 15" W x 11" H x 3" D. Adjustable strap drops to approximately 21".
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Leather is supple with the soft natural patina that develops over thirty years of wear. Light surface marks visible across the front flap, gentle creasing along the strap, and warm brass patina on the hardware, the kind that only develops with time. Interior clean. No original hang tag. This is a lived-in piece with quiet character, not a worked one.
Authenticity: Verified authentic vintage Coach Metropolitan Briefcase, style #5180. Embossed creed patch reads No. F5C-5180, dating production to June 1995 in the United States. Pre-overseas-production Coach, the era serious collectors actively hunt.
